As Mackie Myers completes its first year of trading, we have taken the time to reflect on what we believe are the top recruitment learns from the last financial year.
It’s safe to say that 21/22 has seen unprecedented levels of hiring and resignations across the job market and as it stands market volatility doesn’t seem to be showing any signs of slowing down. Whilst this might seem like every recruiters dream, it has certainly raised a lot more challenges than we have seen in previous climates. Counter-offers are at an all time high, with nearly 35% of candidates receiving counter-offers from their current employers. Additionally, candidates are receiving anywhere between two to four offers at the point of accepting a new role. Given the current conditions we thought it was worth pulling together our top five recruitment learns to take into 22/23…
Experienced recruiters…
Working with an experienced recruiter, as opposed to an agency with the greatest database, has become of much greater importance. Dramatic improvements in recruitment tech has democratised sourcing, and so finding good candidates is only a small part of the job. The greater emphasis is now placed on managing candidates through an effective recruitment process which takes experience and instinct. Pick an experienced recruiter you know and trust to give yourself the best possible chance of securing the right candidate for your organisation.
Motivation factors…
Understanding each candidate’s individual motivating factors is more important than ever. Candidate motivations have changed dramatically over the past two years and there is no longer a ‘one size fits all’ approach to assuming their key drivers. Take office working as an example. When meeting with three people you might find that one wants hybrid working, one wants fully remote and the third will want full time in the office. Make no assumptions and do you best to accommodate individual preferences.
Communication…
Everyone is busy but open communication from all parties is vital. No matter what the issue or concern is, it is important that all parties involved in the recruitment process are airing these upfront. Not only will this create a more enjoyable recruitment process for everyone involved, it will dramatically increase your chances of success in hiring someone or securing your dream job. Worst case scenario, it takes 10 seconds to write a WhatsApp note.
Do more with less…
We believe we have proven the concept of doing more with less. When we launched Mackie Myers we wanted to work with companies that really need and value our help, and that has often meant hiring across a variety of different departments. Whilst 70% of our business is finance, the other 30% has been across other corporate functions. As already mentioned, recruitment isn’t about having the ‘best database’ anymore, it is about being a good recruiter and our clients have seen the value in this approach.
Choose a partner…
Work with people who want to work with you. We have always prioritised quality of work over volume and this has proven to be a success. We have 100% success when recruitment processes are worked in partnerships with clients and candidates, and we can honestly say it creates for a much more enjoyable experience for all parties.
As a start-up business, Mackie Myers has been able to adapt quickly to the new job market and the scenarios that arise from it. Whilst we know the market will not stay like this forever, relying on ‘traditional’ ways of recruiting is no longer fit for purpose. As such, it is important that all parties involved in recruitment are able to adapt and be flexible depending on circumstances.
