Unlocking talent in the hospitality sector

Mackie Myers were recently called upon to deliver two “difficult to fill” vacancies for a multi-site hospitality business in order to appoint two finance business partners into their growing finance function. In this insight article we explore the case study in greater detail.

Challenge
The organisation approached Mackie Myers with the challenge of filling 2 very specific finance business partner vacancies within the finance team. Having been out to market with 5 other agencies over the past month without any appointable candidates, time was of the essence to ensure the two vacancies were not left empty for extended periods of time. The two major challenges for these roles were the specific nature of business partnering that was required, candidates without specific logistics or manufacturing experience simply could not be considered. In addition to this, one of the roles in particular needed to be based at their head office, a difficult location for many to get to, further narrowing the pool of candidates.

Process
For Mackie Myers this type of work could be considered our sweet-spot, having a growing reputation for filling these ‘hard-to-fill’ jobs. We approached the search via our network as well as a thorough headhunting approach lead by one of the directors and the research and data function. Knowing there wasn’t going to be a high volume of candidates to shortlist for this job, within 5 working days we were able to shortlist 3 candidates for the 2 jobs. All 3 were selected for interview and following a series of online interviews 2 out of the 3 candidates were appointed. Both jobs were appointed within less than 3 working weeks.

Solution
Through an in depth discussion with the client and using our extensive recruitment experience, we deciphered that finding a candidate with the right skills and experience was the priority. Given the post pandemic world, we felt geography could be worked around if the client met the candidate that was the perfect fit for the job. Of the two candidates that were appointed, neither were based near head office but both happy to travel to site 2 days per week in exchange for 3 days working from home. Through this compromise from both candidate and client all parties were delighted with the outcome.
