Manager Spotlight: Hermione Rowe

Hermione Rowe joined Mackie Myers 9 months ago to help build our Cambridge Office. We recently had an interview with her to learn more about her background, what she stands for, and how the past nine months have been for her.

Tell us a bit about yourself?

Originally from Yorkshire, I have been living locally in the Hertfordshire area for the last 11 years. I started my career in hospitality and events for a well-known hotel chain - funnily enough I was the wedding coordinator for one of our co-founders. I have been recruiting in the local Cambridge market for 8 years, focussing on finance recruitment across multiple industries.

What made you want to work with Mackie Myers?

When I was due to return from maternity leave earlier this year, as most new mums, I was filled with worry about the job I was due to go back to with reduced salary, the juggle and general ‘mom guilt’. Having worked with Owen previously we have always kept in touch and since learning more about Mackie Myers and their values, I really felt that it was the right place for me in this next stage of my career. The excitement of working autonomously around family life while being a part of something which has impressive growth to date was something I really wanted to be involved with. Since joining I have not looked back, the new Cambridge division has had a great start, and I look forward to the future.

Why Cambridge?

Cambridge is an interesting city, with some of a larger corporates and well-known brands. The area which I really enjoy is the startup/scale up sector and spin outs from the university. The opportunity to work with a business who are creating products/treatment or technologies which are life changing in the medical world is really rewarding. More broadly, East Anglia is made up of variety of manufacturing, FMCG, not for profit and technology business. I find it fascinating to learn about different organisations where on site visits you can be wearing a lab coat in the morning then a hard hat and high vis in the afternoon.

How would you describe your working style with customers?

For me I think it is important to build a long-lasting relationship across a business to really get into the detail and understand the problem you are helping solve in order to find the right solution and candidates. In doing so, any recruitment process can run a lot more efficiently and successfully as I will have a solid grasp of the type of talent that a client is seeking. Otherwise, I am approachable, flexible and aim to give advice and connect people wherever possible. I also do have a bit of northern ‘non nonsense’ about me which means I work quickly!

What advice do you have for clients looking to recruit in this market?

It is a tricky market at present with a lot of uncertainly affecting confidence which makes effective recruitment advice and insights more important than ever. I would also say that quality communication between all parties is absolutely vital to driving successful outcomes – keeping everyone in the loop on time frames and process changes helps keep applicants engaged whereas lack of communication and a messy process can frustrate and disengage applicants.
