Fractional CFO — Battery Technology / Deep-Tech Scale-Up Role overview
A high-growth, investor-backed battery technology business is seeking an experienced Fractional CFO to support the founders, board and leadership team through the next phase of commercialisation and scale.
This is a strategic and hands-on role, likely 2-3 days per week, suited to a CFO who has worked in relevant sectors such as battery technology, EV, energy transition, climate-tech, hardware, advanced engineering, deep-tech or adjacent technology-led businesses.
The business is founder-led and backed by institutional investors, so the CFO will need to be comfortable operating in a fast-moving, entrepreneurial environment while bringing financial rigour, investor confidence and commercial discipline.
Key responsibilities
- Partner with the founders, CEO and board on financial strategy and growth planning.
- Lead financial planning, forecasting, budgeting and cash runway management.
- Build and maintain robust financial models to support commercialisation, fundraising and strategic decision-making.
- Support investor relations, board reporting and fundraising preparation.
- Develop investor-grade reporting, data rooms and financial information packs.
- Provide commercial finance support for pricing, partnerships, licensing, contracts and go-to-market decisions.
- Strengthen financial controls, governance, processes and reporting as the business scales.
- Assess funding requirements, working capital, grant funding, R&D tax credits and capital allocation.
- Support scenario planning, sensitivity analysis and strategic options.
- Work closely with external advisers, auditors, investors and legal partners.
- Help professionalise the finance function while remaining hands-on where required.
Essential experience
- Proven experience operating at CFO
- Qualified Accountant
- Sector relevance in one or more of the following:
- battery technology;
- EV / charging infrastructure;
- energy storage;
- Experience working with VC-backed, PE-backed or institutionally funded growth businesses.
- Strong fundraising, investor relations or board reporting experience.
- Hands-on financial modelling, cash management and forecasting capability.
- Comfortable working in a fractional or part-time capacity.
- Ability to operate strategically and practically in a lean, founder-led environment.
Ideal experience
- Previous experience with founder-led start-ups or university spinouts.
- Experience supporting Series A/B fundraising or similar institutional investment rounds.
- Familiarity with commercialising technical IP, licensing models or hardware-led products.
- Exposure to R&D-intensive businesses, grant funding and R&D tax credits.
- Experience building finance processes from an early-stage or scale-up environment.
- Knowledge of battery markets, EV infrastructure, energy flexibility, storage, OEMs or related ecosystems.
- Prior fractional CFO or portfolio CFO experience.
