The Role
This is a hands-on Senior Product Development Engineer position with responsibility for leading mechanical development activities across the full product lifecycle. Working within a cross-functional engineering team, you will take ownership of product design, prototyping, testing, verification & validation, and manufacturing readiness activities.
The successful candidate will play a key role in transforming innovative concepts into robust, manufacturable and regulated products, working closely with colleagues across engineering, quality, manufacturing and regulatory functions. This position offers a rare combination of technical depth, product ownership and commercial impact. 
 
Main Duties
The Senior Product Development Engineer will be responsible for:
  • Leading the mechanical design and development of innovative healthcare technology products from concept through to manufacture. 
  • Creating detailed CAD models, assemblies and engineering documentation using modern product development tools. 
  • Designing, building and testing prototypes, fixtures, rigs and development systems to assess product performance. 
  • Planning and executing verification & validation activities, analysing test data and generating technical reports.
  • Investigating technical issues and product failures using structured root-cause analysis methodologies. 
  • Supporting product industrialisation, design transfer and manufacturing scale-up activities.
  • Working within design control and quality management processes appropriate for regulated product development environments.
  • Collaborating closely with electronics, software, quality, regulatory and manufacturing teams to deliver high-quality products. 
  • Providing technical leadership and mentoring support to junior engineers where appropriate.
The Successful Candidate
This opportunity will suit an experienced engineer who enjoys combining hands-on development work with technical leadership and product ownership.
The successful candidate is likely to bring:
  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Five or more years of experience within product development, mechanical engineering or new product introduction environments.
  • Strong 3D CAD capabilities, ideally with experience using SolidWorks. 
  • Proven experience developing mechanical products from concept through testing and manufacture. 
  • Experience designing and executing engineering test programmes, verification activities and validation studies. 
  • Exposure to regulated industries such as medical devices, life sciences, pharmaceuticals, scientific instrumentation, aerospace or advanced manufacturing. 
  • Experience working with suppliers and manufacturing partners to support successful product launch and scale-up activities. 
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication and stakeholder management skills. 
Desirable Experience Candidates will stand out if they have experience with:
  • Medical devices, diagnostics, IVDs or point-of-care technologies. 
  • Fluidic systems, microfluidics, cartridges, consumables or fluid handling products.
  • Injection moulding and high-volume product manufacturing.
  • Design controls, ISO 13485, risk management, DFMEA and PFMEA methodologies. 
  • Design for Manufacture (DFM), tolerance analysis and product industrialisation.
