Olly Hetherton recently joined Mackie Myers as a Partner to lead and build the business’ interim practice. We recently caught up him to find out more about his background and what he is brings to the market…
1. Tell us a bit about yourself?
As one of six brothers growing up in rural Yorkshire I am a big family man and northerner at heart. I went to Newcastle University and joined the graduate scheme at Michael Page where I enjoyed a great career, learning all about recruitment and business generally. My parents met skiing so naturally the whole family have always been big skiers. I live in Clapham where I enjoy my social life, experimenting with new cuisines, keeping fit and going on long walks listening to podcasts.
2. What made you want to partner up with Mackie Myers?
Owen hired me into Michael Page when I was a graduate and I put a lot of my training and success over the years down to his leadership and the environment he created. I also worked with Jenna a lot and highly respect both of them in both a personal and professional capacity. We have always kept in touch and get on really well socially so when I saw that they were launching Mackie Myers it was something I was extremely excited to hear more about. I love that the business is both ambitious and progressive which you can see in their branding and tech platforms. The fact that I am joining at an early stage is extremely motivating and certainly plays into my entrepreneurial tendencies.
3. What are your plans for the interim practice over the course of 2022?
Coming in to lead the Mackie Myers interim practice is a great opportunity. I have always loved the interim market as it is fast paced and requires a very practical and commercial mindset. I aim to create an interim practice that can rival the very best in the market at a time when the demand for quality interims is very high. This year I shall work on expanding my network even further and look to bring in talent to work with me to support our growth plans across key sector verticals.
4. How would you describe your working style with clients and candidates?
Fun, genuine and say it how it is. I use my experience and insight in the market to give honest practical advice to both candidates and clients to ensure the best outcome for all parties. I take pride in my network and relationship building skills which I feel is extremely important for any good interim recruiters. I am hugely passionate about interim and love working at pace to tight deadlines, delivering at short notice when the need is greatest.
5. How have you spent your time on gardening leave?
It has been great to have the opportunity to enjoy a bit of time off in between jobs. I went home to spend some time with my mum and dad up north, enjoying country walks, the local pub scene and helping out with a new litter of puppies! I then went to New York with my girlfriend to celebrate her 30th birthday which was a fantastic trip. Christmas plans were messed up somewhat by Covid. But I managed to get into France before they effectively closed the borders and spent three weeks skiing. I had an amazing time, but of course it wasn’t the same having to leave much of my family at home isolating!
